Italian Peninsula, 10th Century BC & Later
AE serpentine fibula or brooch measuring 101 x 49mm. Composed of two strands of metal wire, intact, with a superb patina. The thriving development of the fibula in pre-Roman Italy provides much variation but few fixed in date. The British Museum dates them as early as the 10th Century BC, but in many cases assigns no specific date. Hattatt suggest 7th - 4th Centuries as most likely but is of debate. Etruria is most often assigned as the culture but similar examples are often found in Calabria, Apulia, etc., suggesting a widespread usage. For reference, see: Richard Hattatt, Ancient and Romano-British Brooches, pp. 186-94.
