Description

Antoninus Pius, 138 - 161 AD
AE Sestertius, Rome Mint, 33mm, 19.87 grams
Obverse: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P, Laureate head of Antoninus right.
Reverse: SICILIA, Sicily standing left with triskeles on head holding crown in right hand and poppies in left, S C across fields, COS II in exergue.
RIC 589a   Very rare type. Part of an interesting and lesser known series of coins struck to honor the provinces. Antoninus was very well known to have spent his entire reign either in Rome or very close by. He never traveled and it is a wonder that he should strike such a series of coins. These were struck in 139 AD, so it is possible that they were inspired by the earlier travel series of Hadrian. Only three other examples are in the sales databases.
