Description

★ Among the finest of a very few known examples ★

Thrace, Abdera. AR Tetradrachm, 14.80 g 25.31 mm. Circa 450-425 BC. Smordos, son of Hermokalles, magistrate.
Obv: Griffin with curved wing seated left, raising forepaw; kantharos to lower left
Rev: EΠI ΣM-OPΔO TO PM-OKAΛ around raised quadripartite incuse square; all within shallow incuse square.

Magistrate:
Smordos, son of Hermokalles, was a significant magistrate in the city of Abdera, known for its trade and cultural importance in antiquity. During his tenure, coins were minted that served not only as currency but also as an expression of Abdera's political and cultural identity.

The minting of this coin under Smordos reflects the economic stability and influence of the city in the region of Thrace during the 5th century BC. Abdera was known for its connections to other Greek city-states and played an important role in trade, which is reflected in the design of its coins and the symbols depicted.
