Description

★ Very Rare Coin Weight from Cyzicus: Trident ★

PB Mysia, Cyzicus. One drachm weight (1st century BC–2nd century AD)
Square in form, rounded corners. On the face, ornamented trident to r.; above, KYZ; below, denominational letters?
One of the types on the Kyzikene weights include Kerykeion, an attribute of Hermes (Agoraios), the patron deity of trade and merchants. But, on this rare specimen, the trident, the symbol of the sea god Poseidon, is depicted. Thanks to its strategic location between the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea, Cyzicus is the most important ancient city of Mysia that holds the maritime trade. This piece also represents the smallest denomination of the Kyzikene weights. Its mass may correspond to a drachm.
Unpublished. Cf. Concordia 2, 1096 (but stater). For Kyzikene weights, see O. Tekin, Balance Weights in the Aegean World, Istanbul 2016, pp. 69–84.
Weight: 4.11 g.
Diameter: 17.46 mm.
Described by Pactolus Numismatic Academy (PNA).
