Description

SICILY, Syracuse. Hieron I. 478-466 BC. AR Tetradrachm (24.5mm, 16.97 g, 2h). Struck circa 475-470 BC. Charioteer driving slow quadriga right, holding kentron in right hand, reins in both; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses with wreath held in both hands / Head of Arethousa right, wearing pearl tainia, single-pendant earring and necklace; ΣVR-AK-OΣI-OИ (R inverted) and four dolphins around. Boehringer Series XIIa, 296 (V142/R204); HGC 2, 1307; SNG ANS 97 (same dies); Randazzo 462 (same dies); Weber 1594 (same dies). Darkly toned, traces of find patina. Near EF. Early die state, with good detail.
