Description

Cunobelinus Biga. Flatter Panel/Fatter Horse Type. Sills Class 1, dies 9/12. Kretz Late type, class B2, dies G/11. c.AD 8-41. Gold stater. 18mm. 5.55g. CAMVL monogram in flatter central panel, on stylised vertical wreath, heart-shaped hidden face in top right and bottom left angles, beaded V in top left and bottom right./ Two facing horses left, four-spoked wheel below with pellets in angles, leaf above, [CVNOBELINI in curved exergue], beaded border. ABC−, VA−, BMC−, DK 549 var., S−. CCI 13.0538 (this coin). EF, rose gold, full CAMVL, bold biga. Ex John Follows collection. Ex Great Waltham hoard, Essex, 2011. EXTREMELY RARE only 15 others recorded, including six in museums.

This magnificent and extremely rare Flatter Panel/Fatter Horse Type (Kretz B2) is characterised by a narrower plain-line cartouche containing the CAMVL monogram and by fuller-bodied horses. We believe that the small heart-shaped face seen in two of the obverse angles is Camulos, the war-god of Camulodunon. Follows’ heavyweight, almost mint-state stater, centrally struck on a chunky flan, is a well documented coin from a famous hoard. Published by Dr Philip de Jersey in Coin Hoards in Iron Age Britain, p.134 (this coin) and by Dr John Sills in Divided Kingdoms, pp.647 and 672 (this coin). Not shown in ABC, VA, BMC nor Spink.
