Description

Savernake Wheel. c.30-1 BC. Gold quarter stater. 11mm. 1.22g. Wreath motif./ Belted horse right, with cabled mane, two tails and curvy upper legs, pellet under head, anti-clockwise spiral and small ring above, ring and six-spoked wheel with axle below, ring under tail. ABC 2101, VA 246, BMC 546, S–. CCI 10.2787 (this coin). Near EF, gorgeous yellow gold, bold horse, full wheel. One of the nicest we’ve seen. Ex John Follows collection. Found Stockbridge, Hants., 2010. EXTREMELY RARE only seven others recorded, including one in the British Museum.

For over 100 years the Savernake Wheel was thought to be a Sussex or Atrebatic type. We attributed it to the East Wiltshire group in 1997. Our attribution was supported three years later by archaeologist-numismatist Dr Paul Robinson in his article The East Wiltshire group (Chris Rudd List 109, January 2010, p.2-4). Follows’ minty-fresh specimen displays the full solar wheel. Not in Spink.
