Description

Alii Scavo. Talbot Ale Sca, dies A/1. c.AD35-45? Silver unit. 14mm. 1.03g. Boar stepping right, short dashes for bristles, ringed-pellet between two crescents above, AL FE between and in front of legs./ Horse prancing right, four pellets and ringed-pellet above, SCAVO below. ABC 1705, VA−, BMC−, S−. CCI 20.0416 (this coin). Good VF, lightly toned silver, well centred, full inscription. Ex John Follows collection. Found Norfolk, 2014. VERY RARE only 19 others recorded.

The Alii Scavo type was unknown 17 years ago. The first specimen was found in 2002 and published in January 2003 (Chris Rudd List 67, p.3). We pointed out then that the boar’s forelegs stand for II, which equates with the British letter E, which gives us the name ALE, which was already known from the Ale Sca type (ABC 1708), first discovered in 1929 during the excavations at Venta Icenorum, near Norwich. Not in VA, BMC nor Spink.
