Snettisham. Rings Type. Talbot dies G/11. c.50-40 BC. Gold stater. 17mm. 5.57g. Plain, traces of incuse cross and three curved lines./ Horse right, double stranded tail with pellet below, ‘wing’ motif and pellet triad above, ringed-pellet below, pellet triad in front. ABC 1411, VA 1505, BMC 3365-83, S 425. CCI 20.0438 (this coin). Good VF, golden gold, well centred horse. Ex John Follows collection. Found Norfolk. VERY RARE only 19 others these dies recorded.

The Snettisham stater is part of the Iceni’s first denominational coinage, as brilliantly first observed by Dr John Talbot. Follows’ superb Snettisham stater clearly reveals three curved lines coming from a short straight line, “giving the appearance of a flying pennant” as Talbot says (DPhil thesis, 2015, vol. 2, p.110). What does this symbol represent? A flag, a wing, a fin or two horse ears? As is so often the case, Sir John Evans probably has the right answer. In 1890 he says: “In one angle are three raised lines much like those of a lock of hair on the early types” (The coins of the ancient Britons. Supplement, p.582).
