Description

Selsey Tramlines. Sills dies 1/1. c.55-45 BC. Gold quarter stater. 11mm. 1.17g. Two parallel corded lines with three ringed-pellets between and triad of small rings on each side of otherwise plain field./ Horse left with beaded mane and corded tail, beaded ring below, ring triad in front, curled hair frond above. ABC 632, VA 254, BMC 553-67, DK 189, S−. CCI 20.0413 (this coin). Scintillating EF, rose-gold, well centred horse, boldly ornamented. Easily the nicest example we’ve offered for sale. Ex John Follows collection. Found West Sussex, August 2015. VERY RARE 36 examples recorded, but only 21 outside museums.

Threeness is the theme of this exquisitely executed Selsey Tramlines gold quarter. There are three ringed-pellets between the corded lines and four ring-triads. The horse’s mane joins the wing motif, so we’re meant to see it as a flying horse. Although classed as ‘Very Rare’ it’s worth noting that there are no fewer than fifteen examples of the Selsey Tramlines quarter stater tucked away in the British Museum – fifteen examples which will never be offered for sale. All fifteen were found on the beach at Selsey/East Wittering, West Sussex, c.1873. Follows’ superb specimen is not only heavier than all of them, but also of a much higher grade.
