Description

Ferdinand I, 1835-1848. Medallic 15.5 Ducats 1831 by G. Ferraris. 46 mm. Wedding of Ferdinand of Austria and Marianna Pia of Savoy. Obv. FERDINANDVS VNG REX MARIANNA PIA AVG. Conjoined busts right. Rev. AVSPICATO CONIVNCTIS / AVG TAVRINORVM / A MDCCCXXXI. Joined torches between coats of arms of Hungary and Savoy. Turricchia 72. AU. 54.65 g. UNC
Mentally deficient, Ferdinand I was not intended to reign even if he was the first in line. Knowing he couldn't be evinced, his father Francis II married him to Maria Anna of Savoy in 1831 at the age of 38, and the young princess took great care of her husband. When he finally succeeded his father to the throne of Austria in 1835, he always needed the support of Chancellor Metternich, who served the late emperor since 1821. When the revolution came in 1848, he was forced to abdicate to let his nephew Franz-Joseph I on the throne, and retired with his wife in Prague as he was the last king of Bohemia. He died in 1875 aged 82.
