ANCIENT BYZANTINE GOLD AMULET (CIRCA 10TH-11TH A.D)
Virgin orans
A special example of amulet with exquisite filigree craftsmanship, decorated with enamel and precious stones (the stones have fallen). Jewels were signs of social status, objects of adornment; but they were also amulets worn to protect their owners from evil forces believed to be constantly threatening by demons. Presumably, this amulet is a fine example of the quality a high-ranking cleric or noble could use.
