ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Drachm (Silver, 32 mm, 3.63g , 6 h), Arab-Sasanian type. Citing governor al-Muhallab ibn Abi Sufra (AH 75-79 / AD 694-698), ST (Istakhr), AH 76 = 695/6.
Draped bust resembling Khosrau II to right, wearing elaborate mural crown; behind head, 'GDE ʾp̄zwt'' ('[may his] glory increase' in Pahlavi); before head, 'mwhʾlp' Y / ʾbwcwplʾʾn' ('al-Muhallab ibn Abi Sufra' in Pahlavi); in outer margin, 'bism Allāh' ('In the name of Allah' in Arabic). Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; above altar, star and crescent; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, ST(abbreviation for the name of the mint Istakhr in Pahlavi). good very fine.
Istakhr was an ancient city in Fars province in Iran.
