Roman Provincial
CILICIA. Mopsouestia-Mopsus as Caesarea (temporarily). Claudius (41-54) AE Hemiassarion
Obv. ΚΛΑΥΔΙΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ; Laureate head of Claudius, right.
Rev. ЄΤΟΥϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡЄΩΝ / Γ (Year 3 = 47/8 ?); Turreted, veiled, and draped bust of Tyche, right.
(Caesarea in Cappadocia).
This and another hemiassarion as well as two assaria coins of Claudius had been attributed to a Caesarea in Cappadocia, Cilicia and Syria. Recently, Tahberer (NC 175 (2015), pp. 47-55) has argued that these coins should be attributed to Mopsus instead, which, for unknown reasons, renamed itself to Caesarea between 45/6 and 50/1.
