Greece, Ionian Islands, Venetian Authority (Septinsular Republic), 1800-1807. Gazette, 1801, Garitsa (in Corfu) mint, denomination in Greek, variety with 1 star on the obverse, 2 dashes on either side of the denomination and dash on the left of the date. ΕΠΤΑΝΗΣΟΣ ΠΟΛΙΤΕΙΑ *, stylised lion holding shield with arrows. _1_ / ΓΑΖΕΤΑ / _ 1801, denomination and date within circled wreath (KM1).
A superb specimen with exceptional strike and razor sharp details particularly on the lion which is not often encountered. Magnificent fields with minute traces of deposits holding it back from a net grade.
This coin comes from an issue of three copper coin denominations (1-5-10 Gazettes), minted in Corfu to facilitate money exchange during the very short (1800-1807) period of semi-independence of the Ionian Islands, guaranteed by Russia and Turkey, and allies. The example offered here is of the first type (out of three) with a Greek legend. Missing from most Ionian Islands collections.
