Description

Egypt. Alexandria. Marcus Aurelius, 161-180. Tetradrachm (Billon, 24.8 mm, 12.33 g). Dated RY 4 (= 163/4). Μ ΑΥΡΗ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝΟC Laureate head of Marcus Aurelius to left, with slight drapery on his right shoulder. Rev. Laureate and draped bust of Zeus to right; L - Δ (date) across field. RPC IV.4, 2580. Emmett 2088. Milne 2473. Cf. Savio A., Tetradrammi alessandrini, pp. 87-92. Nicely toned, minor porosity. Good Very Fine. Rare.

Tetradrachm of wide size and well centred on both sides, showing a slightly draped adult bust of Marcus Aurelius left with high relief and good style. On reverse is a big bust of Capitoline Zeus of Roman and not Egyptian tradition. A coin of great rarity, known by RPC IV. 4 in only three specimens.
