Description

Egypt. Alexandria. Trajan, 98-117. Drachm (Bronze, 34.60 mm, 20.27 g). Dated RY 18 (= 114/5). ΑΥΤ ΤΡΑΙΑΝ ΑΡΙ ϹΕΒ ΓΕΡΜ Δ[ΑΚΙΚ] Half-length bust to right, wreathed with corn ears, drapery over far shoulder. Rev. Nilus reclining on hippopotamus to left, holding reed and cornucopia; before, genius and nilometer; L IH (date) in exergue. Dattari 993 (this specimen). RPC III, 4871.1. Cf. Geissen 652 (dated RY 17). BMC 2775. Emmett 551. Rough surface. Very Fine. Very Rare. Only three specimens reported in RPC.

A rare drachm already in the celebrated Dattari collection showing on the reverse, in addition to the usual peaceful image of the Nilus lying on a bed resting on the back of a hippo, also the singular and uncommon figure, at left, of a genius keeper and manager of the Nilometer column.
