Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24.58 mm, 17.34 g). Struck circa 450-440 BC. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣΙ-Ο-Ν Diademed head of Arethusa to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 511 (V269/R363). SNG ANS 163. HGC 2, 1311. Nicely toned and with an attractive reverse. Obverse struck from rusty die, otherwise, nearly Extremely Fine.
