Description

Greek Italy. Southern Apulia, Sidion. AE 17 mm. c. 300-275 BC, overstruck on a Metapontum uncertain issue. D/ Laureate head of Zeus right. R/ Herakles standing right, leaning on club set on rock to right; at left, ΣIΔINΩN. Undertype partially visible: META, barley-ear, symbol (?) above. HN Italy 822. BMC Italy, p. 395,1-2. AE. g. 2.35 mm. 17.00 RRR. Extremely rare, the only coin type issued by this city and apparently the only overstruck example known. In very good condition, for issue. Reddish-brown patina with green hues. VF. The site of Botromagno (near Gravina in Puglia) had long been recognized to be Silvium and Calderoni Martini was able to argue convincingly that Silvium was a corruption of an earlier name, Sidion. This single issue known from Sidion has a reverse identical to the Herakles type at Meteolum (HN Italy 797) confirming the likely location of the mint of that issue in the region. (HN Italy, p. 92).
