Nero (54-68). AE Sestertius, Lugdunum mint, 65 AD. Obv. NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P. Laureate head right; small globe at point of neck. Rev. ANNONA AVGVSTI CERES S C. Ceres, right, veiled and draped, seated left (throne decorated with two griffins), holding corn-ears and torch, facing Annona, draped, standing right, right hand resting on hip, left holding cornucopiae; in centre, modius on garlanded altar right; behind, ship's stern. RIC I (2nd ed.) 390. AE. 24.61 g. 36 mm. Struck on a large flan, well centered. Spectacular bold portrait. Detailed reverse with griffins on throne. Minor smoothing. Somewhat rough surfaces, otherwise. EF.
