Description

Marcus Antonius. AR Denarius, Clodius moneyer, 42 BC. Obv. M.ANTONIVS – III·VIR·R·P·C· Bearded head right. Rev. P. CLODIV[S] – M·F· Mars naked but for helmet standing facing, holding spear in right hand and sword in scabbard in left. Cr. 494/17; B. 19 (Clodia) and 20 (Antonia); RRSC D 275.2. AR. 3.94 g. 20 mm. RRRR. Of the highest rarity, very few specimens known. Issue of great historical importance. Well centred and fully readeable, lightly toned. Banker's mark on obverse and peripheral areas of weak strike. VF/Good VF. Minted in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of Julius Caesar by conspirators led by Brutus and Cassius, this issue very shortly precedes the expedition to Asia Minor. The obverse depicts Marcus Antonius with a short beard and on the reverse the personification of Mars, god of war.
