Description

Johannes (Usurper, 423-425). AE 13.5 mm. AD 423-425. Rome mint, 2nd officina. Obv. D N IOHANNES P F AVG. Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. SALVS REI PVBLICE. Victory advancing left, head to right, holding trophy over her shoulder with her right hand and dragging captive with her left; to left, staurogram and Є; in exergue, RM. RIC X 1916. AE. 1.23 g. 12.00 mm. R. Rare. A nice example with green brown patina. Peripheral weakness. Good VF. Johannes, possibly of Gothic descent, becomes emperor in Rome in AD 423; not recognized by Theodosius II in the East, who supports his relative Valentinian III, is executed by East-Roman troops in May/June 425.
