Description

★ Bearded Gordian III ★

Gordian III (238-244). AE Sestertius. Rome mint, AD 244 (?). Obv. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, wearing short beard and mustaches. Rev. IOVI STATORI SC. Jupiter standing facing, head right, holding sceptre and thunderbolt. RIC IV 298a. AE. 21.71 g. 31.00 mm. RR. Rare and exceptional issue, usually dated 241-243 AD, but with bearded portrait, typical of the late issues of 244 AD. Bold strike. Better mustache and beard details than usually seen. Lovely olive green patina. EF/Good VF.
