Description

Continental Greece. Kings of Macedon. Philip V (221-179 BC). AR Tetradrachm, c. 180. In the types of Alexander III of Macedon. Pella mint. Obv. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ/ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ. Zeus Aëtophoros seated left, legs crossed; club to left; B below throne. Price 636; HGC 3 1054. AR. 16.59 g. 29.50 mm. R. Lightly toned, underlying luster. Slightly rough surfaces, scratch on reverse. About EF. This Tetradrachm belongs to the final group of issues of Alexander, which represents a revival of the coinage. Seyrig showed that the style of the head of Herakles compared closely with that on bronze issues in the name of Philip V. The Alexander issue is not, however, marked with the controls of the royal coinage of Philip, and was presumably struck to make a particular payment for which this type of coinage was stipulated. The letter B which occurs on this issue may be related to the name of the Bottiaeans of the Emathian plain around Pella.
