Description

L. Censorinus. AR Denarius, 82 BC. Obv. Laureate head of Apollo right; to left, uncertain symbol (globe?). Rev. L. CENSOR. The satyr Marsyas standing left, with right arm raised and holding wine-skin over shoulder; behind, column bearing statue (?) on top. Cf. Cr. 363/1b; Cf. B. (Marcia) 24. AR. 3.06 g. 17.00 mm. RRR. Extremely rare and unpublished. Lightly toned. VF. An enigmatic example, with a symbol unlisted in RRC (cf. Banti 90/2: Nascia 11, 1972, lot 233). Despite the light weight it does not appear to be a fourrée. A contemporary imitation ?.
