Sex. Julius Caesar. AR Denarius, 129 BC. D/ Helmeted head of Roma right; behind, anchor; below chin, X. R/ ROMA. Venus in prancing biga right, crowned by Cupid behind her; below horses, SEX.IVLI; in exergue, CAISAR. Cr. 285/1; B. 2. AR. g. 3.88 mm. 17.00 R. Rare. Pleasant, well centred and nicely toned, with iridescent hues. Good VF. The reverse relates to the origin of the Julian gens, which claimed descent form Julus, the grandson of Venus and Anchises, and the founder of Alba Longa. (RSCI, p. 53).
