Sicily. Kamarina. AE Tetras or Trionkion, c. 420-405 BC. D/ Facing gorgoneion. Three countermarks (pellet in incuse circle) on nose, and flanking gorgoneion's mouth. R/ KAMA. Owl standing right, head facing, grasping lizard; barley grain to right; above, two countermarks (pellet in incuse circle); in exergue, three pellets (mark of value). Cf. CNS 6; Westermark & Jenkins 179; HGC 2, 546. AE. g. 4.33 RRR. Very rare and superb. Lovely emerald-green patina. Countermarks reddish-brown. About EF. A very interesting and enigmatic example, with (contemporary?) countermarks. Unlisted in the standard references and apparently unpublished.
