Description

Sicily. Syracuse. Second Democracy, c. 420 BC. AR Tetradrachm, signed by unknown master "A". D/ Charioteer driving slow quadriga right; [above, Nike flying left, crowning charioteer]. R/ Head of Arethusa right, wearing double-hook earrings, hair bound in sakkos drawn together at top and decorated with a meander pattern above chevrons, signed A at top; ΣYPAKOΣI-ON and four dolphins (two off flan) around. Boehringer 697; SNG ANS 231. AR  mm 24 g. 16,97. Of wonderful style, very attractive and prettily toned. Obverse die flaw. Good VF The unknown master engraved who signed this reverse simply "A", was the first to sign dies at Syracuse, around 15 years before Eumenos, Kimon and Euainetos.
