Description

Ringwood, New Jersey. May 6th, 1776. Type-set and handwritten receipt for 116 bars of Iron, weighing over 2 tons, to be delivered to Edward William Kris (spelling of last name may be different from how it appears, and could be Edward William Kiers, who served as Captain of the Haverstraw Company in the Orange County, New York militia). "Ringwood Teams" is signed at bottom right corner, and a handwritten note about the order is at left. During the Revolutionary War, Ringwood, New Jersey, was home to major iron-making operations, all under the management of Robert Erskine. The iron provided critical support for the Continental Army, and was used to manufacture much-needed hardware and tools. Ringwood's iron was also used in the manufacturing of links for the Hudson River Chain, a defensive device installed across the Hudson River north of West Point. Fine to VF condition with some toning from age and an interesting watermark of a Royal Crown and crest. A fascinating historical document from an important area during the Revolutionary War.
Estimate: $450-750
