ATTIC RED-FIGURE KYLIX WITH CENTRAL SATYR

Ca. 510 - 500 BC. A possible Pioneer Group kylix adorned with light red-figure decoration of a nude ithyphallic satyr in the centre of the cup on a black ground. The figure is designed with simple lines to realise the extremely elegant details. The exterior is completely black. Size: 375mm x 295mm; Weight: 1.16kg Provenance: Property of a London art gallery, acquired on the German art market; previously in Germany since 2002; Ex. Sotheby's London May 17, 1983, lot 302. With some restoration.This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. Published in Sotheby's London, Catalogue of Antiquities May 17, 1983, lot 302 with pl. 28; Galerie Günter Puhze, Freiburg im Breisgau Catalogue Art of Antiquity 26, 2012, No. 102; Beazley Archive Pottery Database 8647.
