ROMAN INTAGLIO WITH MARS IN GOLD RING
Ca. AD 200-300
An oval-shaped banded agate intaglio, engraved with a left-facing depiction of the god Mars. The god is depicted in a standing pose, grasping a long spear and shield. Mars, in Roman mythology, was the god of war and a prominent figure in the Roman pantheon. Venerated for his association with military prowess and strategy, Mars was often invoked by Roman soldiers before battle. The intaglio is set within a possibly later high-carat (20-22ct) gold ring with elaborately decorated shoulders.
