GANDHARAN SCHIST SEATED BODHISATTVA MAITREYA
Ca. 200-300 AD
This magnificent sculpture, skillfully carved from a schist, represents the seated figure of Bodhisattva Maitreya, exuding an aura of profound spirituality and grace. The bodhisattva assumes a tranquil posture, with hands placed in the dhyana mudra, a gesture commonly associated with meditation and inner focus. In his lap, he holds a delicately shaped, pear-like flask, symbolizing the nurturing essence of his compassionate nature. Bodhisattva Maitreya seats in the lotus position atop a clothed plinth with two enigmatic beasts, each positioned on opposing corners, serving as emblematic guardians. Behind his noble head, a resplendent halo emanates, denoting his elevated spiritual status and divine presence. The sculpture portrays the bodhisattva's muscular body, which is partially concealed by draped fabrics enveloping his left arm and legs. His head, adorned with flowing wavy hair cascading down his back, is adorned with an intricate headpiece that bespeaks his exalted spiritual lineage. The countenance of the bodhisattva reflects a serene expression, with the face subtly sunken into a state of deep meditation. His eyes, adorned with heavy lids, evoke a contemplative gaze, while the elongated earlobes signify his transcendence from worldly attachments. Delicately sculpted lips convey an air of benevolence and compassion, further enhancing the spiritual aura that envelops the figure. Bodhisattva Maitreya's divine visage is further enhanced by a profusion of ornamental adornments. A torch necklace gracefully encircles his neck, symbolizing the illuminating wisdom that he embodies. A meticulously crafted chained necklace and beaded bracelets embellish his wrists, signifying his connection to the spiritual realm. Additionally, an ornamental armband graces his right upper arm, adding to the regal splendor that emanates from this divine representation of Bodhisattva Maitreya.
