ROMANO-BRITISH INTAGLIO WITH MINERVA
Ca. 1st century AD
A convex intaglio adorned with a finely engraved depiction of the esteemed goddess Minerva, known as Athena in Greek mythology. This portrayal showcases Minerva in a dignified standing pose, with her gaze directed towards her right side, evoking a sense of grace and authority. Of particular significance is Minerva's helmet, a symbol of her divine power and wisdom. The goddess is also adorned in a flowing garment, which drapes elegantly over her form. Minerva, a revered deity in both Roman and Greek cultures, was widely recognized as the goddess of wisdom, knowledge, and strategic warfare. Her esteemed position in the pantheon was further enhanced by her embodiment of various virtues, including wisdom, courage, and justice. The depiction of gods and goddesses on intaglios was a common practice in Roman glyptic art, where these miniature masterpieces served as potent symbols of devotion and personal identity. These intricately engraved scenes not only showcased the artistic skill of the craftsmen but also conveyed profound narratives and religious beliefs.
