GANDHARAN SCHIST HEAD OF BUDDHA
Ca. 200-400 AD.
A schist stone head of a Buddha on a modern stand. He is shown with closed, slightly smiling lips, full cheeks, long pendulous earlobes, and gentle almond-shaped eyes with thin, high, arching eyebrows, all typical features of Buddhist representation. His hair is formed of Classical-style waves, arranged into a Buddhist-style top knot. He has an urna on his forehead, representing the third eye and spiritual clarity. Cf.
