KINGS of MACEDON: Philip III Arrhidaios (323-317 BCE), AR Tetradrachm, Struck under Archon, Dokimos, or Seleukos I, circa 323-318/7 BC. Babylon, 16.95g, 24.7mm.
In the name and types of Alexander III.
Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin.
Rev: Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; M in left field, ΛY below throne. Price 3692.
From the Tiberius Collection.
Struck shortly after Alexander’s death in the place of his demise, where he allegedly willed his kingdom “to the strongest.” The wide-eyed and heavy-browed portrait is thought to depict Alexander, in which case this tetradrachm would be one of the earliest Alexander portraits.
