Description

England. Aethelred II. 978-1016. AR Half Penny (10mm, 0.78g, 12h). Long Cross type (BMC IVa, Hild. D). Unknown mint; moneyer Leofsige. Struck circa 997-1003. +ÆÐELRE[D REX ΛNGLO(?)], bareheaded draped bust left / +LEO FSIG[___], long cross voided with each limb terminating in three crescents. North 774. Very Fine, slightly bent.

According to Jonsson and Van der Meer study in “Mints and Moneyers c. 973 - 1066” moneyers with the name Leofsige worked at the following mints: Gloucester, Ipswich and Shrewsbury. Given this, it is therefore likely that the present coin was minted at one of these mints.
