Description

England. Aethelred II. 978-1016. AR Half Penny (10mm, 0.80g). Intermediate Small Cross / Crux mule type (BMC iii, Hild Cb). Winchester mint; uncertain moneyer. Struck circa 995-997. [+]ÆÐELRED RE[X ΛNGLთX], diademed and draped bust left / [+__] E M ¯O PINT, short cross voided, [C R] V X in angles. BEH - ; North 773/770. Near Very Fine, slightly wavy flan, flan cut (2h). Rare mule.

With the readable “E” of the reverse legend, paired with the “PINT” spelling of Winchester and based on B. E. Hildebrand “Anglosachsiska Mynt i Svenska Kongliga Myntkabinettet. Stockholm, 1881” the moneyer for this rare mule could possibly be either Ælfsige (BEH 4055) or Godwine (BEH 4241).
