Description

Germany. Archdiocese of Magdeburg. Anonymous c. 1040. AR Denar (17.5mm, 1.10g). Gittelde mint. Head of saint / Cross, in angles possible alpha and omega, uncertain sign. Dbg. 1310 (as unknown mint); Mehl 919. Fine, usual flat spots, wavy flan.

This type is usually attributed to Gittlede, however recently P. Ilisch has proposed Corvey as mint due to the striking similarities to the reverse of Dbg 1619. See “Überlegungen zur Bedeutung der Münzstätte Corvey im 11. Jahrhundert” (Von der Weser in die Welt. Festschrift für Hans-Georg Stephan zum 65. Geburtstag, Langenweissbach, 2015, p. 165-170)
