Description

England. Aethelred II. 978-1016. AR Half Penny (10.5mm, 0.79g, 6h). Crux type (BMC iiia, Hild. C). Uncertain mint; moneyer Eadmund. Struck circa 991-997. + ÆÐELRED R[EX ΛNGLOX], bareheaded draped bust left with scepter in front / +EADMVN [__], short cross voided, C R [V X] in angles. North 770. Very Fine, metal roughness, small flan crack a long inner circle.

The cut along the cross line indicates that this coin was cut during its circulation. According to Jonsson and Van der Meer study in “Mints and Moneyers c. 973 - 1066” moneyers with the name Eadmund worked at the following mints: Cambridge, Colchester, Lincoln, London, Northampton(?) and Norwich. Given this it is therefore likely that the present coin was minted at one of these mints.
