Description

★ Rare Type ★

Denmark. Harthacnut 1035-1042. AR Penning (15mm, 0.74g). Viborg mint. Struck circa 1040. Blundered legend, standing figure facing, possible wearing a pendilia holding in right hand long cross-tipped scepter / Blundered legend, voided short cross. Two cross pattée and annulet in angles. Hauberg 67 (Svend Estridsen); Hbg. auk. - ; LEB - ; Hede -; Ernst -; Becker - . Fine, flat spots. Rare.

Hauberg attributed this and the similar Hbg 66 to the mint of Viborg and to the reign of Svend Estridsen based on the Nordrum find which, at the time, was the only find containing these types and based on the stylistic features. However, the recent Errested hoard (unearthed in 2014), contained one Hbg 66 but no coins in the hoard were minted later than the 1030s and with no later t.p.q. than 1040. Moreover, none of the Danish coins in the hoard can with certainty be attributed to the reign of Svend Estridsen. Therefore H. Horsnæs proposes that this type and Hbg 66 were minted in the early 1040s thus late in Harthacnut’s reign. The mint attribution of Viborg seems very likely. For more information about the reattribution see Helle W. Horsnæs, "Ny datering af Haubergs Svend Estridsen type 66-67 og en beslægtet gudslam type" in Nordisk Numismatisk Unions Medlemsblad. No. 4, October 2020.
