Description

Denmark. Svend Estridsen. 1047-1075. AR Half penning (8mm, 0.33g). West Danish mint (?). IIIIII•I [?], draped bust left; cross-tipped scepter before / IH?DI? [?], voided short cross cross pattee and trefoil of pellets in angles. Hauberg 3; Hbg. auk. 732 var.; LEB 1634; Hede III 47; Ernst -; Becker collection - . Very Fine, peck mark.

The cut along the cross line indicated that this coin was cut during its circulation. Hauberg attributed this coin in Lund based on one example which reverse read +IADRIF ON LVNDL (1.20g). However, the present specimen and others have much lower weight which indicates a different mint in West Denmark, most likely Viborg but Aalborg or Aarhus could also be possible. See K. Bengtsson, “Inte bara Lund som myntort – Jylland också!” in Nordisk Numismatisk Unions Medlemsblad No. 5, August 1999.
