Phrygia, Dionysopolis. 1st century B.C. AE 20 (19.8 mm, 7.01 g, 11 h). Menekles Biano(?), magistrate. Head of Dionysos right, wearing ivy wreath / ΔIONY-ΣOΠOΛI, MENE, meander pattern between legends, all within wreath made of ivy and fruit. von Aulock Phrygiens II -; BMC -; SNG Cop. -; SNG von Aulock -. gVF, green patina, minor surface flaking. Extremely rare, unpublished and unique.
This unpublished type combines a few of the telling indicators of the Phrygian Dionysopolis; first is the appearance of Dionysos, both on the obverse and the wreath of ivy and fruit (grapes?) on the reverse. The meander pattern is common among coins of this city as it was located near the Meander river, and the magistrate MENE is presumed to be the same Menekles Biano who is named on coins dating to the first century B.C. (see von Aulock Phrygiens II, 6-11 and BMC 3-4).
