Description

CILICIA. Uncertain mint. Circa 4th century BC. Obol (Silver, 8.32 mm, 0.57 g). Herakles advancing right, wielding club and bow. Rev. Persian king grasping stag by the horns, all in incuse square. Newell -. SNG Levante -. SNG Copenhagen -. BMC -. Unpublished in the standard references, cf. Roma Numismatics Limited Auction 4, 2012, lot 1950. cf. CNG e-sale 142, 2006, lot 58 (Drachm). Near Very Fine. Very Rare.

The attribution of this coin is uncertain, we found a parallel with another specimen sold at auction whose note reads: The obverse type would seem to link this coin to the issues of Kition, but the Persian royal motif on the reverse is not typical of the period of the autonomous kings of Cyprus. Perhaps a satrapal issue on the mainland, reflecting Cypriot influence.
